Your Brain on Porn: 3 Surprising Health Benefits (& 1 Minor Setback)

what does porn do to your brain

What Does Porn do to Your Brain? You Might Not Believe the Incredible Answer…

Let’s talk about porn.

More and more, the media says things like, “Porn is addictive!”…

“Porn is ruining your relationship!”…

“Men who watch porn have no self-control!”…

It’s all one big, collective eye roll.

But because porn is still a “taboo” subject for many, it’s clear that people aren’t going to stop talking about it anytime soon.

So what’s really going on here?

Is porn… dangerous???

I analyzed a few studies to get to the bottom of it, so let’s begin by looking at the facts.

Is Porn REALLY All That Bad For You?

One of the biggest arguments against porn and its accessibility is that it can have a negative effect on your sex drive, or that it can lead to erectile dysfunction.

Yikes.

This is a major warning sign, I know… but I’m happy to report that it’s not true at all!

In a 2015 study conducted on 280 men, the men who watched porn on a regular, weekly basis reported feeling more sexual arousal than the men who watched less.

That’s right — men who watch porn experience MORE sexual arousal, not a desensitization, as many people like to think.

Plus, the study went on to report that erectile dysfunction and porn consumption have nothing in common. Literally, nothing.

Good news, right guys?

The Myth of “Porn Addiction” (And Why It’s Lasted So Damn Long)

This one’s a hot topic. So many people are convinced that watching too much porn can spiral into a debilitating addiction.

Here’s the thing about “addiction,” though: Addiction is something that classifies someone indulging in a product, service, or substance to a point of detriment.

And when it comes to pornography, you just can’t compare it to a “downward spiral” like a heroin addict would experience.

A lot of what’s being presented to us through the media about pornography uses the word “addiction” when, in all reality, this is a sensationalist title given to the act of having a little bit of fun.

Studies have shown that the idea of being an addict is more distressing than the use of pornography itself. Seriously.

So if you’re worried that you’re watching a little too much porn, don’t stress. But there are some situations when it’s not the healthiest choice you can make.

Should You Stop Watching Porn if You’re in a Relationship?

If you’re in a relationship, porn can be a tricky topic… though it doesn’t have to be.

You might think that the best way to maintain your porn habit in a relationship is to watch it alone, when you know she won’t be home.

Well, as it turns out, the opposite is true! While it might sound counterintuitive, watching porn with your partner is actually healthier than watching it alone.

And that’s because watching it alone could lead to some negative, unseen side effects on your relationship.

Specifically, if your S.O. finds out you watch porn without her, she might be offended, or think that she isn’t satisfying you in bed.

However, if you approach it from a more open perspective — like, “Hey honey… I had this crazy dream last night that we were watching porn together… it was super hot. Would you want to try that sometime?”

Then chances are she’ll open up to you, and will actually encourage you to watch more porn!

Studies support this as well — one study conducted by the University of Oklahoma found that watching porn alone while in a relationship could increase the chances that you’ll break up or get divorced.

But the study also found that watching porn with your lady did not increase the chances of breaking up or getting divorced!

So don’t indulge alone if you’re in a relationship. Like so many tips and tricks we talk about here, these activities should be done together.

The One Minor Setback That’s Impossible To Ignore…

Alright, I can’t put if off any longer — there is ONE setback to watching porn.

Unfortunately, watching porn will shrink your brain’s reward center over time. So if you watch too much, eventually you will experience less and less pleasure from the same amount of porn.

This doesn’t mean you should stop watching porn — definitely not.

But just be aware that even though you can’t technically get “addicted” to porn, that you shouldn’t spend hours and hours watching it every day.

It’s sort of like riding a crazy roller coaster. The first time you ride it, it’s exhilarating and full of excitement.

But ride it every day for a week straight, and do you think you’ll be as excited on day 7 that you were on day 1?

Probably not.

While pornography is a great thing, know that the majority of it is essentially fiction and fantasy.

Keep your grounds in reality so not to sully your expectations of sex.
